Hatsumōde (初詣) is the name given to the first shrine / temple visit of the New Year in Japan. This could take place on any of the first few days of the New Year. It is an important visit and lines can be long. The picture above, with guards segmenting portions of the crowds into essentially a massive queuing system, was taken at Sensō-ji temple in the Asakusa area of Tokyo.
