Jongmyo

jongmyo shrine jeongjeon hall

Jongmyo Shrine (종묘) in Seoul is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a Confucian royal ancestral shrine that served as a venue for the rites of kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. As such, it also houses the kings’ and queens’ spirit tablets. Pictured above is Jeongjeon Hall, which is the main building of the shrine. As impressive as the hall is, the stone courtyard in front is truly a sight to behold. It’s elevated and it’s massive; when you step onto it, the sense of awe is almost palpable; it kind of feels like you’re on the doorstop of ancient gods.
